MMA Weekly has the worthless scoop.
Affliction Entertainment Vice President Tom Atencio on Saturday confirmed that his company has entered into an agreement with Golden Boy Promotions, the boxing promotion led by Oscar De La Hoya. The two will co-promote a hybrid evening of boxing and mixed martial arts to be held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. on Jan. 17.
“It’s very good news,” Atencio told MMAWeekly.com. “It’s good for the company, and it’s good for the sport.”
Already confirmed for the fight card is Fedor Emelianenko, who was forced off Affliction’s second card originally scheduled for Oct. 11 due to a chip fracture in his right hand. An opponent for the Russian has not yet been named.
Well, and people still wonder why Dana White and the UFC continue to dominate the market, maybe its because other promotions continue to show unbelievable stupidity. Yep, you know what this means, we will be waiting through boxing matches to see Fedor fight.
I just don't understand who in their right mind would think this is a good idea, this means Affliction head honcho Tom Atencio leap frogs Monte Cox to become MMA's premiere douchebag. Congratulations to Tom for jumping the rankings in record time. I guess the simple fact that the majority of boxing fans hate MMA and vice versa never entered the tiny brains of anyone involved in this soon to be colossal failure. Please UFC, pry Fedor away from this god awful train wreck.

some people like boxing and mma, but i wouldnt want to wait for a 10 round boxing match to watch a fedor fight
bottom line...fedor is fighting.
I love boxing video games...do I love boxing though? nope...would I want to see a couple boxing matches before the MMA bouts?...nope. I'd actually hope the PPV is really cheap cause I wouldn't wanna pay around $50 for a show I'm not gonna fully watch.
Though I like both boxing and MMA, I have to agree with everyone else, I don't want to see them mixed together on the same show. And unless they have a huge, big-named bout, no die hard boxing fan is going to tune in and buy this PPV. It's still kind of early to speak on it, but this just has bad business decision written all over it. The core MMA fans are going to buy this regardless to see Fedor fight so they are obviously not the target. Casual fans aren't all of a sudden going to be intriqued because there's going to be some boxing matches, and the core boxing fans hate MMA. So the people that will buy it are already going to buy it, I don't see how the combination of these two promotions is going to bring in anyone else.
i fully agree, i'm not trying to sit through boxing just to see a few mma matches. lets hope the ufc can work something out.
I guess it can only mean one thing: less buyers for their PPVs. If I buy the even, I won't watch it in direct for sure, I can't view more than 3 rounds of boxing and I rather not view any... . I'll set my Tivo to record it and later treat the boxing matches as I treat those commercials for diapers.
I disagree...
I love MMA. Boxing is so-so really one dimensional, but I do enjoy seeing a pro boxer slip, dodge, duck, and weave away from strikes... it's a thing of beauty, but you can also see this in MMA too. Let's look at this with the 'glass half full', maybe the MMA part of the show will attract more fans for MMA and help borden the appeal. Yes boxing and MMA fans will bicker, but we can hope for a good performance from both sports. Anyhow, Fedor is a serious pimp, and he is going to put on a great show regardless. I think Fedor's mastery of MMA could show boxing fans the light. MMA is great, and who would you like boxing fans to see as an ambassador for MMA? Fedor a bad choice?

Honestly, it does not bother me one iota.
I'll watch boxers, and I'll probably enjoy it.
This will probably convert lots of boxing fans to MMA.
The bottmom line is boxing is boring. We've already got a pro wrestler wannna-be contaminating the sport. Piss poor move Affliction.
Be quiet, this is good. Boxing does not interest me, i will not watch it. Fact is, Most people do not even know what mma is, they have never heard of it, and when they go and see that boxing/mma event, they will see how much more interesting/entertaining mma is.. This event is good for the sport, because it will get it much more attention, and at the right place to Fedor.
I might be proven wrong in the future but I respect Fedor for not giving in to the UFC. That is exactly what fighters do. They give in to the only game in town that is controlled by a foul mouth tyrant and an organization that makes millions yet pays its fighters peanuts. They all line up to sell their souls and get their asses raped by dana. The UFC controls the fighters in every way and it pays them shit. I respect Fedor for not bending over for the UFC ass rape
Oh this is just brilliant. Put one of the most boring combat sports alongside MMA... I don't mind boxing when there's an exciting match but that's like one in a hundred. Also you just know the boxers at the show are gonna be your average boxer not some one worthy of headliner status. Sorry but this has failure written all over it.
10 rounds of ppl just slowly punching each other...kill me now :(.
If they really insist on doing something stupid like this they should put K-1 style matches or submission grappling... Sports which actually have things in common with MMA and fans from all 3 would enjoy as myself!
MMA has been around long enough and has been available to the mainstream that if Boxing fans haven't "seen the light" then they never will.
Boxer's are fighters that haven't evolved.
i think the point of this partnership is to get boxing fans to watch mma and we all know what a market that is.
boxing still remains king with the king of ppv numbers they put out and if affliction wants to try and tap that market, let them do it.
plus, it gets them in with the las vegas big guns.
Wanna get me to watch...let the MMA fighters FIGHT the boxers!...like a team event...I would definitely tune in for that.
PS The next great thing for these promoters...a combined volleyball and tennis match! It's SO obvious!!! They both use a net, during the intermissions it could just be raised or lowered, they both use one round ball and the fan base is exactly the same. Even if you don't like one of the sports, you'll be sure to love it after an event like this!
