Miami Herald Rips Mixed Martial Arts

This article makes me sick. While I'm not thrilled about the idea of Kimbo being the headliner for the first MMA on network TV, thats no reason to go on and bash the entire sport. Here's an excerpt from Miamiherald.com writer Greg Cote.

CBS-TV lends the fraud-sport grandly calling itself Mixed Martial Arts the false imprimatur of legitimacy by this week inaugurating a new prime-time series, EliteXC Saturday Night Fights -- with Miami's own inexplicably popular Kimbo Slice the first headlining act.

Pardon my not swelling with civic pride over one of our own hitting the big-time at last for what amounts to legalized criminality, a plain barbarism that would tend to discourage a pedestal for this man.

Would-be hero Kevin Ferguson (Kimbo's real name) says he dreams of tearing off a man's arm and beating him with it.

Taking liberties, I'll guess that when real hero Martin Luther King said, ''I have a dream,'' he had somewhat nobler pursuits in mind.

Surely the ghost of Edward R. Murrow is weeping over his network's self-debasement by association, though not for the first time.

What do you mean MMA makes boxing look genteel. How many people have been killed in the boxing ring. Thats right keep counting. Now compare that to how many people die in MMA. Oh done counting already. These ATHLETES train and work hard and love there SPORT. Now don't you wish you had something in your sad little life of breaking down other peoples livelihoods you could be proud of besides your pathetic little articles in a sad little publication. Get to the gym and train you might find it very rewarding.

I CANT BELIEVE THE MIAMI HERALD WOULD SAY ALL THAT CRAP ABOUT MMA. I FIND IT VERY DISRESPECTFUL TO ALL THE ATHLETES WHO TRAIN HARD EVERYDAY FOR THERE SPORT. IM BOTH A MMA AND BOXING FAN, AND I BOXED FOR YEARS AND NOW CURRENTLY TRAIN IN MMA, AND I CAN TESTIFY THAT MMA IS NO MORE BRUTAL THAN BOXING IS. THE PEOPLE WHO WRITE THESE KIND OF ARTICLES DONT BOTHER TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES ON THE SPORT. THEY BASH ON IT BECAUSE ITS RELATIVELY NEW TO THE WORLD. THE BOXING WORLD IS IN SURVIVAL MODE RIGHT NOW. A BOXER CAN JAB HIS WAY TO VICTORY, AN MMA FIGHTER HAS TO GO OUT THERE AND FIGHT, STANDING UP, ON THE GROUND, ETC. THEY NEED TO DO SOME MORE "RESEARCH" OR BETTER YET, STEP ON THE MAT AND SHOW WHAT THEY ARE MADE OF.

Cote is a columnist. It's a column not an article. He gets paid to have opinions. Someone is always going to disagree with opinions. If he were an MMA fan there would be people posting on their blogs about an "article" praising a barbaric sport.

A racer can crash into a wall at 100mp/h and die in an absolute mangle, and the world will go on about how much of a tragic loss it is, and will classify such a person as a national hero.

I think the problem with the publics perception of MMA is that 'anything-goes' fighting is generally associated with animosity and great dislike between two or more people. What do you want to do when someone wrongs you or pisses you off; you want to beat the shit out of them (in some cases). Animosity and competitiveness are present in all sport. In MMA the ring/cage is the playing field, and in order to be the best you need to beat down your opponent. Mixed Martial Artists don't fight for the sake of hurting each other (at least not fore mostly), but to prove they're the best at what they do, as is the case with all sportsmen. Until the public can disassociate violence, hatred and even war with MMA, silly articles like this will continue to pop up.

I don't care if he writes columns or children's books. He needs to get his facts straight.

After what the Miami Herald did to Jose Santos , I'd say their credibility is about Zero.

the most annoying thing about this article isn't the fact that he did no research and looks like an idiot, ie "MMA and rival UFC " exact quote from the article.

But its annoying because he sounds like he thinks he is so much better than anyone who enjoys the sport.

I just pictured him sipping tea while wearing a monocle and top hat while writing this.

I wear a monocle, drink tea (with my pinky up), and train jiujitsu and muay thai. That cock sucker is just what happens when you give a stupid person a job where he gets to be heard.
