10 Things Learned From UFC 82

10. Josh Koscheck has really improved every facet of his game, especially striking. Its time for him to get a contender fight again even though he lost to GSP. He should fight Marcus Davis.

9. Even though Jon Fitch didn't totally dominate a game Chris Wilson, its time for a title shot.

8. The Welterweight division is totally stacked- Fitch, Parisyan, Serra, GSP, Alves, Koscheck, Marcus Davis, Matt Hughes, and even Dustin Hazelett has a chance to be really good in the years to come.

7. Low kicks and straight kicks are way too underutilized.

6. Dan Henderson avoided the Muay Thai clinch of Anderson pretty easily, but he couldn't avoid everything else.

5. Joe Rogan REALLY hates stand-ups! I disagree, if all a guy is doing is laying on his opponent or "molesting" him as Joe put it it takes away the entertainment factor in an MMA fight, so stand them up. Of course there are early stand-ups which is BS, if the fighter is working with punches or trying to improve his position thats fine and its entertaining to true MMA fans

4. I still think watching all the undercard fights should at least be an option. Especially in this case, with Diego Sanchez, Andrei Arlovski and Josh Koscheck. Luckily we got to see the Koscheck fight at least.

3. Brock Lesnar's first UFC win will be Mark Coleman. With this announcement its just hard for me to see Coleman winning this fight at UFC 85. Both great wrestlers, but Brock is bigger, stronger and younger. Good job by the UFC and Dana White though for setting this all up, it will be a bigger draw than Brock vs Eddie Sanchez, Jake O'Brien, Antoni Hardonk or someone like that becuase he needed a fight that wasn't against another top heavyweight.

2. Anderson Silva's chin is made of granite. Hendo landed one of those vaunted right hands and it didn't even faze him in the slightest.

1. I still don't think Anderson Silva is the best pound for pound fighter in the world, but he is the single best striker on the planet.

one thing i do have to say about all of that is i took a look at everyone in the 185 devision, and I'm pretty confident that if Dan Henderson can't do it, no one else in the devision can beat Anderson Silva.

Dude?? Not the best pound 4 pound fighter in the world. He just embarrassed one of the best fighters ever. I don't even think anyone in the 205 division could beat him at this point in his career. I know he's fought at 170. Maybe he has to man handle GSP then move up and spank Rampage. I know this sounds a little left field but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens. GSP is probably my fav at the moment but there's no denying Silva is unstoppable..

so who's the best pound for pound?

Anonymous said...

Silva pulled an easy win over the supposed best contender. Who's left?

No Other Way said...

Fedor is the best pound for pound fighter in the world hands down. not saying silva is bad just not as good as fedor. Fedor has time and time again shut down the BEST in the world.

fedor faught the best in the world . like who Zulu, HMC . lol yea right
A.silva is P4P #1 .

Fedor has wins over crocop, mark hunt, mark coleman, Big nog, keven randleman, and fujita. He's on a 24 fight winning spree with being rocked ONCE. Silva hasn't fought even half as many fighters at the same caliber.

"Fedor has time and time again shut down the BEST in the world."

LOL

and silly me - i was reading your article as if it was written by someone who knows a thing or two about MMA.

how many top10 has Fedor faced in his whole career? 2? 3?

that's "time and time"?

he had one perfect matchup for him: Minotauro, and won two decisions playing not to lose rather than to win. he went to the judges against CroCop also, and we all know how CroCop did in the cage. and that makes him what? best p4p forever even if he never faces another serious challenge?

Swtcorrado said...

I disagree, Fedor is not the best p4p fighter in the world because he ducks the best fighters in the world. Even if the Randy fight happens and he beats him I dont think he's number one. Anderson is DESTROYING guys left right and center. In his last 1/2 dozen fights no one has even come close. If you want to look at Fedors last 1/2 dozen fights your gonna have to go back a few years. He's just not very active. You always have something to prove, thats what makes a champion.

Fedor has fought and beaten... Matt Lindland, Mark Hunt, Mark Coleman (twice), Crocop, Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, Big Nog (twice), Naoya Ogawa, Kevin Randleman (please watch that fight!), Yuji Nagata, Gary Goodridge, Kazuyuki Fujita, Egidijus Valavicius, Heath Herring, Semmy Schilt, Renato Sobral, Ricardo Arona, Hiroya Takada, Martin Lazarev, and a good handful of others and has only one loss. If you don't recognize any of these names, then you shouldn't be leaving any comments as to who the best fighters are. Know you know, and knowing's half the battle.

I think that if anyone got their head out of their ass and started using leg kicks against Silva (notice Silva's wide and planted stance), he would loose his base for that wonderful striking ability. Before pulling a ridiculous submission via scissor kick on Silva, Ryo Chonan took a lot of punches and administered even more wicked leg kicks. If someone's legs are battered, they can't react, even to something as obvious as a scissor kick. Also, if GSP put on 15 MORE pounds of muscle, I couldn't see anyone beating him... and he knows the effectiveness of leg kicks.

You didn't mention Okami at all. He had a rather big night. Personally I've been a fan of Evan Tanner for a while, he's not the best but he is very well rounded and returned after a long hiatus with a 3 win streak, I thought he would take a decision. I was very surprised that Okami stood with him and dominated seeing as how Okami, though not a notorious finisher, takes every fight to the ground and wins there. He showed very improved stand-up. He needs some bigger fights and later a title shot. I'm not going to say he would win against Silva and he's not an over exciting fighter but I think that is attributed to the fact that his defense is unmatched by anyone. Good fighters have been nullified by his defense and it would be interesting to see how Okami's great defense would do against Silva's great striking, how long could he last and could he find a hole in Silva's game?

silva has never fought anyone like Rampage to my knowledge, so I highly doubt he'd "spank" him. same with GPS vs Silva. Notice that both Rampage and GSP have very similar fighting styles as far as being physical mutants and very aggressive.

So far Silva has fought people who were grapplers and wrestlers first, then tacked on striking to their arsenals.

Swtcorrado said...

My comment about Rampage getting "spanked" was in reference to his fight with Henderson where it went 5 rounds to a close decision. Now in regard to the Hendo/Silva fight, Silva nullified Henderson on the ground and finished him quickly in the second round. Could Silva beat Rampage?? I dunno. My previous comment about moving up and down in classes and holding all the belts is a bit of a stretch. But would anyone really be that surprised if it happens? And with regards to GSP. I love the dude. A total class act but I don't think he could hang with Silva. But in that fight I'd love to be proven wrong. Either way those fights are never gonna happen.

I've seen GSP comment on wanting to dominate his division and then move on to other divisions. If no one can even come close to beating Silva AND GSP dominates the next two or three fights, I could certainly imagine a Silva/GSP fight happening.

Well, Im not an Anderson Silva fan but I have to say, "if Anderson EVER fought Rampage, Rampage would be in the cross hairs of an ass whipping. Not only is Anderson a WAAAY better striker than him, he would also dominate him on the ground, just like he did to Hendo. Might take him 3-3 1/2 rounds but he would definitely win.

its pretty simple guys, to be the best you have to beat the best WHOOOOOOO as ric flair would say lol

but all jks aside, 2 things need to be done to be top p4p, beat the best guys and fight on a consistent basis, fedor hasnt done any of those 2 in the past 2 years, if he gets back to winning ways then no doubt he is the best, but right now hes at 3 with da spider and gsp at the top.

about #4 i paid $45 see 82 and i feel like i got ripped out of the undercard fights. it used to be unknown fighters and sometimes they would show a good ko or something after the main event. but we all watched these fighters come up, now they want us to pay extra to watch them online. i mean andre on the undercard? didnt frank mir hold the last main event. whats up with that.

Anonymous said...

John... very good point... activity is very important in being considered the CURRENT best p4p.

And alittle2intoit... the main event was solely based around the name "Brock Lesnar". If Mir would have fought anyone else it would have been much further down the chain.

i dunno. gsp did say he's not done with just winning the welterweight belt. he wants more. he said next he will move up the weight class and compete with them. if it happen, that'll be great. shouldnt be hard to gain some weights. they do it all the time, cutting weight for the weigh in and gaining it all back before the fight. my thoughts on best p4p is fedor silva gsp. now looking at all their strength's and weaknesses. gsp i dont think have a strong chin, silva would beat him. fedor can withstand getting slammed on his neck, dudes tough. silva havent been tested yet. and he looks like he'll run circles around fedor. makes him first on my list followed by fedor and then gsp. he should move up a class. no point being the best in ur class, test urself and accomplish more
